Gambling Proponents Plan for Referendum on Vegas-Style Casinos

The New Jobs and Revenue for Florida, a Political Action Committee was created by John French, a political consultant and Tallahassee lawyer last week with the intention of starting a statewide constitutional referendum on the issue of gambling. An email was sent on Monday headlined; “They’re BAAAAACK!” by No Casinos, a group that so has fruitfully countered suggested legislation this year which would have led to the operation of these resorts.

French has not mentioned who was actually responsible for the pro casino PAC or if the primary objective of the PAC is to echo the efforts by big casino groups, Wynn Resorts, Genting and Las Vegas Sands top bring in full scale casinos to Florida.

The head of the anti-gambling group, John Sowinski said the referendum plans should be publically announced without delay. If certain formalities are fulfilled by pro gambling forces, the referendum question would be brought up during the 2014 elections.

Sowinski said that, they were currently on the side which was opposing the legislation and the quicker the public discussion commences, the better it would be. He also added that people generally seek out reasons to be against things and not for them and the issue of gambling has bee has of major concern over time.

These efforts to change the laws in the state of Florida which permit casinos to run games like craps, blackjack and roulette have come into spotlight in the 2012 legislative session with gambling companies, business lobbying groups and lawmakers dueling back and forth on the advantages of actually enabling the setting up of such gambling arenas in South Florida.

The social conservatives of the two major tourist attractions in Central Florida, the Florida Chamber of Commerce and Walt Disney World, the Sminole Tribe of Florida and the state’s pari-mutuel industry, whole current gambling operations would face fresh completion joined forces against legislative. It is likely that they will line up if the current PAC goes through with its plan of giving the voters the power to decide the fate of the bill directly.

Sowinski said that Florida has something at stake here unlike the other regions where casino gambling has been legalized. He said that the region has built up a reputation as being a family friendly tourism destination and already has a sustained economy.
