It seems everyone's playing poker these days. If they're not jetting off to exotic locations around the world to play in the likes of Vegas's WSOP, Melbourne's Aussie Millions or Barcelona's European Poker Tour, they're playing it online from the comfort of their sofa.

There are so many online poker rooms out there, so many different bonuses on offer, and so much confusion about whether US residents can play or not. Here we list the poker rooms we recommend, all of which are entirely legal for you as a US resident to play at.

But first, is it really legal to play online poker from the US?

Until 2005 it seemed everyone was trying their hand at online poker. But then the US government passed the UIGEA bill in 2006 making it illegal for online gambling sites to perform transactions with US based financial institutions. As a result, some big name poker rooms closed down their offering to US residents, while other sites continued to operate, allowing US residents to open real money accounts.

On April 15th, 2011, the bottom fell out the industry when the FBI shut down some of the biggest online poker operators: Full Tilt Poker, Absolute Poker, Poker Stars, Ultimate Bet and later Doyles Room, charging the founders with bank fraud and money laundering.

The fact is that, although the 2006 bill resulted in many sites shutting down their US operations, it is still actually legal to play online poker from the US.

There are many poker rooms that US residents can legally play at, and we list them below.

What to look for in an online poker room?

It's hard to decide which poker room to play at because they all appear so similar. But once you look closer, and with our helpful guidance and recommendations, you'll spot some differences to help you settle on the one that best suits you.

Types of poker > Texas Hold'em is the original, and some might say the best. But there's also Omaha, Omaha High Low, 7 Card Stud, 7 Card Stud High Low, 5 Card Draw and more. Choose from tournaments where you buy-in at a set amount and get the same number of chips as everyone else, or ring games where you take however much into the game from your bankroll as you want.

Bonuses > All poker rooms give out bonuses one way or another. You'll get a bonus on your first deposit, maybe a bonus when you re-deposit, bonuses when you win freerolls etc.
Offline events > These days many players are winning their buy-in to offline tournaments through an online poker room, so if you've got the skill and a bit of luck, it could be the cheapest way to win millions!

Loyalty programs > All poker rooms offer some sort of VIP or loyalty program which will reward you in bonuses or prizes for your activity at the site.

Freerolls > Want to try before you buy? Freerolls offer the chance to play in a tournament without risking any of your money because they're - you guessed it – free! Winnings can be in the form of bonuses or cold hard cash and they're a great way to get a feel for the site when you first register.
